Across Kyushu, 15,318 homes sustained damage, including 699 which collapsed and 1,045 which were partially destroyed, More than 4,600 buildings sustained damage, while around 10,000 people were displaced. Damages were estimated to have cost at least 95.2 billion yen ($598 million). 39 recorded dead.
An estimated 3,000 shoppers were inside the Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima when the second floor collapsed, followed by an explosion.
